Tomorrow, April 11th is Pet Day

I just realized April 11th, was Pet Day! I can't believe I missed writing about it, but if you have a pet, you know every day is "Pet Day", so I'm writing about it today. Most of us have, or have had, a pet and consider them to be part of our
family. When my husband Dave and I were first married, we had a Basset Hound; we named her Mindy. When we had children, Mindy was a "mother hen" to them! She was definitely a part of our family for a long time!
When we lived in California we got our children hamsters (I will NEVER do that again as they were hideous; they ate their babies!!!), a cat (named Mr. Pickles), and turtle (named Tippsy!) When we moved back to Michigan (from California), we had bunnies for a short time (Snowflake and Indiana Bunny), a parakeet which talked, danced and sang (especially to Carmen's song, I Love Jesus!) and then my sister gave us an English Springer Spaniel (Scout). We also got another Basset Hound
(Giggles). Scout and Giggles were loved parts of our family and we have many wonderful memories of these sweet dogs. We now have a cat - Candy - and she is a wonderful part of our family.

Since most people have dogs as pets, I thought it would be fun to share some Fun Dog Facts. Did you know . . .

  • A dog's sense of smell is 10,000-100,000 times more acute as a human's sense of smell
  • According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the smallest dog on record was a Yorkshire Terrier in Great Britain who, at the age of two, weighted just four ounces.
  • The longest lived dog, according to Guinness, was an Australian Cattle Dog, named Bluey, who lived to be 29.
  • More than one in three American families own a dog.
  • A greyhound can run as fast as 45 miles an hour.
  • Eighty percent of dog owners buy their dog a present for holidays and birthdays. More than half of them sign letters and cards from themselves and their pets.
  • Most pet owners (94 percent) say their pet makes them smile more than once a day.
So, which "fun fact" do you find to be the most interesting? I thought the one about the smallest dog only weighing four ounces is pretty interesting!

What was/is your favorite pet? Our dogs were my favorites! Enjoy Pet Day!
