Today is National Poinsettia Day!

According to Nationaltoday dot com, "What we refer to as National Poinsettia Day is called 'La Flor de la Nochebuena' — or Flower of the Holy Night in Mexico. Poinsettias are revered there because of a legend which recounts the story of a poor little girl who despaired of having no gift for Jesus' birthday. When an angel appears to tell the child the most important thing is to give a gift with love, the child gathers weeds from the side of a road to place in the baby's manger. Miraculously, the weeds bloomed into gorgeous red star flowers."

National today also shares some fun Poinsettia facts - did you know . . .

  • King Montezuma adored them - this Aztec king believed the sap from Poinsettias reduced fevers.
  • There are hundreds of varieties and colors - while red is the most popular color, there are 100 varieties and may be pink, white, gold, even blue!
  • They are harmless - while we have heard they are poisonous, apparently they are not, BUT it is still a good idea to keep them away from pets as they may cause pets which eat them to vomit.

If you do not have any beautiful Poinsettias in your home, but live near Frederik Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI, then be sure to visit as they have hundreds of them in their Tropical Conservatory and throughout their beautiful facility!

You will find more information about Poinsettias and this day to celebrate them at this link.
