Today January 18th, is National Michigan Day

Today is National Michigan Day and since I was born, raised, and live in Michigan, I thought it would be fun to learn about some silly laws in this State as well as some very interesting facts about Michigan as well. Let's start with the silly laws - did you know . . .

  • Cars may not be sold on Sunday.
  • A woman isn’t allowed to cut her own hair without her husband’s permission.
  • It is illegal for a man to scowl at his wife on Sunday.
  • It is illegal to let your pig run free in Detroit unless it has a ring in its nose.
  • It is illegal to paint sparrows to sell them as parakeets.
You will find more silly laws at this link.

Now for some interesting facts about the State of Michigan, did you know -
  • The name is a French variant of the Ojibwe word ‘mishigami,’ which means ‘large water or lake.’
  • Michigan has a population of about 10.1 million and an area of roughly 97,000 square miles, making it the 10th largest state by population and 11th largest by area.
  • The Mackinac Bridge (known in Michigan as the "Mighty Mac") was built in 1957 to connect the Upper and Lower Peninsulas, making the journey safer and more convenient. At 26,372 feet long, (five miles) it is the longest suspension bridge in the Western Hemisphere and the third-longest suspension bridge in the world! (It is also scary to drive or ride across the Mighty Mac - the road has a grating system which allows you to see through to the water below! When it is windy the bridge is closed.)
  • In 1837 Michigan was admitted to the Union as the 26th state after President Andrew Jackson signed the bill into law.
  • Michigan is known for fishing and forestry. This is because it has 3,288 miles of coastline — the longest freshwater coastline in the mainland United States — and 90% of the Upper Peninsula is covered in trees.
  • Michigan is most commonly called the ‘Great Lakes State.’ It is also known as ‘The Mitten State,’ ‘Water, Winter Wonderland,’ and ‘The Wolverine State'
  • The state has more golf courses than any other in the U.S.
  • Michigan is home to the largest limestone quarry on Earth.
  • Michigan is home to the only floating post office in the world, J.W. Westcott II.
  • The people of Detroit were the first U.S. citizens to have phone numbers.
