Today is National Iowa Day

Today is National Iowa Day, so it is a good day to look at some of the silly laws in Iowa and at some of the things which make Iowa special. Did you know in Iowa . . .

  • Mustached men cannot kiss women in public. 
  • All one-armed piano players must perform for free.
  • In the town of Ottumwa a man cannot wink at a woman he doesn't know.
  • in Marshalltown, Iowa they're cracking down on a major problem that touches all Iowans. Horses are FORBIDDEN from eating fire hydrants.

  • The state was named after Iowa Native Americans who populated the area when European settlement forced Eastern tribes to settle in the Western part of the country.
  • Acquired as part of the Louisiana Purchase, the Iowa Territory settlement did not happen until around the 1830s.
  • The Territory of Iowa was established in 1838, with a population of 23,242. In 1846, it joined the U.S. union.
  • Iowa became well-known for assisting in the escape of slaves from the South to Canada via the Underground Railroad. The state also contributed more soldiers to the war than any other state. 
  • The wild rose is usually represented as the prairie rose and is the official state flower of Iowa.
  • The Mississippi River runs on its east and Missouri on its west.
