Summer Reading - Bear and Bird

Reading to and with the children we love is one of the most important things we are able to do to help them when it comes to talking, developing a vocabulary, and reading on their own, so let's be intentional about surrounding them with books! One book you might consider for the young children you love is Bear and Bird the Picnic and Other Stories by Jarvis from Candlewick Press.

Favorite Features -

  • This one book has four short stories in it which encourages young readers to read on their own - it is part of the Sparks Books for Young Readers.
  • Simple illustrations on each page - add to the fun of each of the stories.
  • Bear and Bird are fun characters for young readers - they are sure to like these two!
  • Stories encourage friendship, getting along, caring for one another, and humor!
Candlewick Press says, "Bear and Bird are best friends, and they spend a lot of time together. They don’t always understand each other, but both agree all they want is for their friend to be happy. So when Bear forgets the most important thing to pack for a picnic (but pretends he didn’t), Bird doesn’t let on she knew all along. And when Bird is upset to discover her friend has more of a certain talent than she does, Bear finds a touching way to make her feel better. Whether it’s the tale of a missing Bird and a “talking” flower which has Bear bewildered or a blanket whose irresistible coziness inspires a comic misunderstanding, Jarvis’s well-honed timing combines with gentle humor and genuine affection which will have readers eager for more."

I love this first chapter book for young readers. Whether you get it for a child you love to read on their own, or to you, or you read it to the children you love, Bear and Bird the Picnic and Other Stories is sure to become a favorite book at your house!

Candlewick Press sent me this book to review, but my opinions are my own.
