Summer Reading - Keep Up Duck!

Summer may officially be a few days away, but here in Michigan it is in the 90's and humid - not very comfortable for sure. But warm or not, Summer is the perfect time to engage the children we love in reading books. Studies consistently show if we begin reading to children when they are babies they will begin to talk sooner, will have a larger vocabulary, will read for themselves sooner, and will do better in school. Even one of these reasons for reading to children are enough of a reason to do this, but all four make it clear - reading to and with the children we love is something we are able to do which truly matters.

So, over the coming weeks I'm going to share with you about some wonderful books you could get to read to and with the children you love. Today I'm very happy to let you know about Keep Up Duck! by Ivan and Rachel Bates, published by Candlewick Press.

Favorite Features -

  • I LOVE the illustrations! Full of colors and details which will capture the attention of children - and adults as well!
  • I LOVE how they included a Basset Hound in this story!
  • I enjoyed the way the authors showed "Little Puck" used his imagination to think of solutions to his problem.
  • I enjoyed the humor of how the story ends - I won't spoil it by saying how it ends, but it is excellent!
Candlewick Press says, "Mama Duck and her ducklings are swimming to the lily pond, but the smallest duck, Puck, is always at the end of the line. As paddleboats splish and splosh by, Puck falls farther behind. “Keep up, Duck!” Mama quacks. Puck looks at the nearby boats and wonders, how can he keep up? He may not swim very fast, but he is determined. Hop! Hop! Plop! Will he have the last laugh? Children will love being in on the cheeky Puck’s sneaky solutions and mimicking all the sound words and the titular catchy chorus."

I agree, children (and parents/grandparents, too) are going to love Little Puck and this fun story! If you are looking for a fun book for the children you love who are ages three to seven, then Keep Up Duck! is a book to check out for sure!

Candlewick Press sent me this book to review, but my opinions are my own.
