Initially the idea behind Global Cat Month is to confirms one thing — we have loved our cats since the beginning of time — or close to it, and to promote the humane treatment of cats. So, let's learn a few things about cats - did you know . . .
- Ancient Egyptians were the first civilization to harness the glory of the feline. Nearly 4,000 years ago, they domesticated our four-legged friends by keeping them near food stores. (This helped control vermin and other pests.)
- It wasn’t until the 1960s when litter boxes really caught on. After that, we grew to love them as indoor pets.
- Cats were apparently aboard Christopher Columbus' ships as he set sail for the Americas.
- The worldwide cat population exceeds 500 million.
- Cat kidneys are able to filter out salt from water and use the desalinated water for hydration.
- In North America, cats are the most popular pet. According to some estimates, there are 73 million cats compared to 63 million dogs.
- Cats can jump up to six times their length.
- Cats have 230 bones, while humans only have 206.
- Cats have whiskers on the backs of their front legs, as well.
- Cats have nearly twice the amount of neurons in their cerebral cortex as do dogs.
- Cats live longer when they stay indoors.
- Cats have up to 100 different vocalizations — dogs only have 10.
Enjoy Global Cat Day!
