Today is National Pumpkin Day

Yes, today is National Pumpkin Day, and since pumpkins are so good for you - and SO tasty - I'm very happy today to share some fun pumpkin facts with you along with a recipe I found on  Pinterest . . . Pumpkin, Cinnamon Pull-Apart Bread! Doesn't this sound like the perfect bread for a Fall breakfast, brunch, or special dinner?!!!! I am going to try this with my family . . . not only will it taste delicious, but I know it will make my house smell like fall - all pumkiny and wonderful, but first some fun pumpkin facts - did you know . . .

  • Pumpkins are one of the best-known sources of beta-carotene (an antioxidant converted to vitamin A in the body), and are loaded with fiber, potassium, and vitamin C.
  • Pumpkins are a member of the gourd family, which includes cucumbers, honeydew melons, cantaloupe, watermelons and zucchini. 
  • Most people don’t realize they are fruits — not vegetables.
  • These plants are native to Central America and Mexico, but now grow on six continents. Their history in North America goes back 5,000 years.  
  • The potassium in pumpkins can have a positive effect on blood pressure.
  • The original Jack-o'-lanterns were made with turnips and potatoes by the Irish.
  • Over 1.5 billion pounds of pumpkin are produced each year in the United States.
  • The top pumpkin-producing states are Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California.
  • The world's heaviest pumpkin weighed over 2,600 pounds. It was grown in Germany!
  • Each pumpkin has about 500 seeds.
  • There are more than 45 different varieties of pumpkin. They range in color like red, yellow, and green with names like Hooligan, Cotton Candy, and Orange Smoothie.
  • Every single part of a pumpkin is edible.
