Today is National Vermont Day

If you or someone you love lives in Vermont, today is a day to celebrate as it is National Vermont Day! So, let's look at some of their silly laws and interesting facts - did you know . . .

  • It's illegal to undress in public in Vermont, but if you leave your house naked, it's totally fine. (This one makes no sense at all.)
  • It is against the law to whistle underwater.
  • You're not allowed to paint a landscape during war time.
  • In the city of Barre, all residents are required to bathe every Saturday night.
  • If you're a woman and you want to get false teeth, you're going to have to ask your husband for a written letter of permission.

  • Vermont was the 14th state to join the United States.
  • It was the first state to join the union after the original 13 states. 
  • Vermont is known as the Green Mountain State. The name ‘Vermont’ is from the French ‘Les verts monts,’ which means ‘green mountains.’
  • It was one of the first states to officially ban slavery.
  • Winter usually starts in November and lasts through March.
  • Vermont is famous for its local maple syrup. 
  • Vermont has one of the highest cattle populations in the U.S., with a 0.41 human to cow ratio.
  • As of 2022, Vermont is the second least populated state in the U.S., just behind Wyoming.
  • The famous Ben & Jerry’s ice cream started at a gas station on Route 7, Shelburne, Vermont, in 1981.
