crafting with grandma - One-Eyed Monster Slippers!

Today I'm remembering when my grands were little - from time to time we had "monsters" which "invaded" my home - of course I'm NOT talking about my sweet grands, but "monsters"! I remember one day twelve years ago when I was fixing lunch in the kitchen and my grand ran into the kitchen and told me there were "monsters in the hall!" I asked if they were teeny, tiny or ginormous, humongous! He said they were the "most ginormous, humongous, EVER!" I asked if they were nice or cranky. He said they were "the most cranky monsters, EVER!!!" He said they were going to eat me - I asked whatever should I do and he said he would protect me! This is one grandma who is so thankful I have such a brave grandsn at my house when the most ginormous, humongous, and cranky monsters EVER invade my home!

So, when I thought about crocheting slippers for the grands that year for Christmas, of course I knew I had to make "monster" slippers! Today I thought I'd re-share the pattern for the slippers with you - in case you have "monsters" "invade" your home from time-to-time, too!

Slipper bottom - I used a "H" hook for my one-year old grand's slipper and a "J" hook for my four year old grand's slipper. I used Bernat Colorama yarn because I wanted a thick and soft yarn for the bottom of the slipper.

  • Row 1 - chain 13; in second chain from hook 2sc and 2sc in next stitch, sc 8, 2sc in next stitch, 3sc in next stitch, on opposite side 2sc in next stitch, sc 8, 2sc sc in last stitch - join with first stitch
  • row 2 - chain1 - 2sc in each of the next 3c - sc in each stitch to the last two, two sc in each stitch, 2sc in next two, sc to last three and 2sc in each one - join with first stitch
  • row 3 - chain 2, 1dc in same stitch, 1dc in next stitch, 2dc in each of the next 2 stitches, dc in 5 stitches, sc in 7 stitches, 2sc, 1sc, 2sc in next 2 stitches, 1sc, 2sc, sc in 7 stitches, dc in 5, 2dc, 1dc in 2 stitches, 2dc - join with first stitch
  • row 4 - chain 2, 1dc in first stitch, 1dc,  2dc in next 3 stitches, dc 6, sc 5, 3dc, 2dc, 1dc, 2dc, 1dc in next 2 stitches, 2dc, 1dc, 2dc, 3 dc, sc 5, 6 dc, 1dc,  2dc in last 3 stitches - join with first stitch
  • row 5 - chain 1 - sc in each stitch with 2 sc in one stitch on each side of heel - join with first stitch
Make two.

Slipper upper - continue with same hooks - I used Red Heart Super Tweed.
  • Upper Section—Ch 8, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, ch 1 to turn each row. The remainder of section is worked in back loop of st only.
  • 2nd Row—1 s c in each s c increasing 1 s c at the beginning and end of row.
  • 3rd Row—1 s c in each s c, working 3 s c in center s c.
  • Repeat the last 2 rows 2 times
  • Work even for 8 rows
  • Work one row in both loops of st, break yarn.
  • working both loops, sc for five stitches  chain one, turn and continue to sc each row until it reaches around the back of your slipper bottom.
  • stitch to opposite side.
  • make eyes - ch 3, join, chain two, dc 12 times, ch 1, 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next stitch, continue around, join. - make two
  • make eye centers - ch 3, join, chain two, sc 12 times, join. - make two
